Today, Jason Rothenberg, The 100 writers, and the network teased fans via Twitter and YouTube with a nearly two-minute clip of the season three premiere episode, “Wanheda, Part One.” It features the Canadian crooner Shawn Mendes as the Arker, Macallan, in a ‘bar-esque‘ scene. Along with him are Lindsey Morgan as Raven Reyes and Paige Turco as Abby Griffin. See the video below and tweet or comment your thoughts.
At the time of this article’s 2016 publication, Mendes had long been a fan of the dystopian drama and reached out to the writers to see if he could land a role. Now, that’s dedication and determination if you ask me. Apparently, the writers agreed to his request, and adding a pop star to any medium will significantly increase ratings and revenue. The 100 could use another youngster to its often turbulant and morally challenging narrative.
Naturally, Mendes brought along his vocals and performed “Add It Up” by the band, Violent Femmes. Personality-wise, Macallan is described as “scrappy and young.” Yet, he additionally brings a soft ominosity with his singing to blend in with the show’s darker elements.

The 100 additionally marks Mendes’ first on-screen acting gig, which comes as a double surprise, seeing how he’s as much of a fan as we are! While “Wanheda Part One” is his only episode and he hasn’t appeared since, Rothenberg confirmed that Macallan survived at the end of season 5 and was placed in the cryosleep chambers along with Bellamy, Echo, Clarke, and the others. He just didn’t wake up, leading to the belief that Macallan passed on before the series finale, “The Last War.”
Lastly, my view is that Shawn lightens and mellows the ever-troubled moods of people and surroundings. It was a lovely touch, as Raven and Abby were engrossed in a serious conversation and unaware of what was to come.
The 100 returns on January 21st, 2016, on the CW at 9/8 Central.
