How many people have you met that can say that they witnessed the impossible? Well, that is where my story begins. My name is Odessa I am a grounder this is how we came in contact with the sky people.
One night well I was collecting wood for the fire back at camp. Well I was walking through the woods it was starting to get dark, I thought I should start walking back but I decided to keep walking farther into the woods and I heard a rustling I stopped in the tree I heard a faint noise I wanted to know what it was so I walked closer and heard a voice say help please my foot is stuck in the branch I canât get out. Is anyone out there? What should I say I thought to myself should I help whoever this person is? what if itâs a trick?
Hello is anyone there? I hear the voice say again. I am from outer space my dropship crashed and I can show you where it is if you will help us to safety please help us. What is your name sky person? It is Kendall my people are injured will you help us please. How many of you are there Kendall of the sky people? There are 100 of us can you help us Odessa? Yes I say as I help her down.
Where are the rest of you at and why were you out here alone? I was trying to find your people but it started to get dark and I heard noises so I climbed this tree but then my foot got caught on one of the branches and I couldnât get down.
Thank you Odessa, follow me I will show you where they are. Why did you come here Kendall, how did you even know where or if there were even people left? Well our ship was running out of oxygen and we wouldâve died anyways so they just figured they would send us down to see if Earth was safe so they could come down.
I donât know how people knew if there were humans living here or if we were actually sent to our deaths. I really donât understand it myself but itâs what the council decided and we didnât necessarily have a choice in the matter.
Anyways Odessa, were you born here or are you from somewhere else? I was born here Kendall, but do you know how far away your friends are? Or were you walking farther away than you thought because it seems like you donât know where they are and we have been walking for two days and I have seen this tree more than I should have seen it.
Ok I donât know where we are. I am sorry but I felt like if I told you that you would just stop helping me. Iâm so sorry.
You donât need to be sorry I understand why you didnât tell me but do you remember any distinct features of where your ship was? Kendall Kendall where are you at? Iâm over here Odessa I can see the ship follow me, ok but donât leave without telling me where you went because⌠letâs just say some of us arenât the friendliest to outsiders so just stay close to me so you donât get hurt.
Ok then well follow me it is just over here, ok Iâm right behind you Kendall. I canât see anyone around we should search the area to see if anyone besides me left the ship. You should check inside Odessa see if there are survivors or if anyone could be saved if not too badly injured. We should have a code word say safe if you find anyone and I will do the same.
Ok I will check inside be sure to be aware of your surroundings I donât want you to get hurt Kendall. Ok letâs check this out to see if anyone lived, it looks like there is a code on the door do you know it by chance Kendall? Hello Kendall where are you?
She is probably just looking around for people from the ship I say as I looked at the door closer I saw that it was cracked open so I opened it all the way and looked inside and I saw corpses at least 50 but where are the other 49 people were they taken were they killed by the rogue grounders and dragged off?
Where are they I say under my breath as I walk farther inside and see a word written in blood. It looks to be recent. I step closer to see what it says. It says LEAVE NOW in Grounder. It must be the rogue Grounders. Kendall I yell as I run to the exit. Kendall where are you? Come to me if you can hear me Kendall please please Kendall.
Odessa Iâm coming stay at the ship till I get there donât leave. Oh thank God Kendall I say as she walks up. You need to see this I say as I show her the ransom note on the wall. Oh my God I hear her say. Do you think they are alive Odessa do you? I donât know Kendall Iâm so sorry about your friends but they might be dead. If so you can come to my village and stay with me if you want.
Can we still look if itâs not too late Odessa? How long do you want to look Kendall? If we donât find them after two days then we give up and I live with you is that ok? Yes that is fine I say as we leave the ship and start looking for them.
A day has passed and we havenât found them. I can tell Kendall is getting weaker. She hasnât stopped to rest until she finds her friends. I am starting to worry if she is ok or not. I hope for her sake that her friends are alive. Please let them be alive. Odessa do you know where the rogueâs home is if they even have one she says as she sits on a log not too far from me. Odessa do you think they are actually alive?
I want you to be completely honest with me because I am starting to doubt it myself she says as she starts crying. I sit down beside her and hug her and try to calm her down. I hear her whisper, I miss them Odessa I really do.
Itâs ok Kendall I say as the earth goes silent and it is just Kendallâs soft weep and my own voice repeating itself on a continuous loop in my head. Then I feel something almost like a weight lift and drop to the ground at my feet and reality hits me like a bullet.
I look down at my feet and I see Kendallâs body laying there limp and I see an arrow sticking out from her back. Kendall I say as I drop to my knees and start crying over her body. I am so sorry Kendall I am so sorry I say in a low whisper as I feel my own body go limp as if to say I canât go any further.
This is where my story ends as I lay there next to Kendall. My world stops moving. I stop thinking and then I see a light through the darkness and I see her and she says to me, Odessa come with me come with me itâs ok you completed your time here on earth come with me. I love you Kendall.
